Can it be a cracked cilinder head?

Try the cap first, it's cheap, easy to change and it's an often failure.....

You can check the valve, when you try to squeeze one of the tubes to the radiator, when the engine ist warm, there should be pressure on the system and so on the tube, but carful not to burn your fingers.
